A Brief History:
The beginning
Essex Turbo began trading over 25 years ago as a small family business
re-manufacturing turbochargers for the already existing commercial market in
the UK. It was quick to establish itself as a leading independent outlet with
the ability to service a wide range of requirements.
Expansion
Essex Turbo expanded through the 1980’s aided by the arrival of
mainstream passenger vehicle turbocharging. The founder Gordon Baker began to
see the potential in the fast road and passenger car turbo re-manufacturing
market by introducing a nationwide exchange / re-manufacturing service. The
company became one of the few Garrett appointed distributors.

Development
During this period of expansion Essex Turbo were appointed by Garrett
to carryout prototyping, which saw the development and introduction of such
components as the ball bearing turbocharger and VNT technology. It was through
this development work that the current proprietor Mick Ireland became involved
in the turbo industry providing the key engineering skills and knowledge
required to move the company forward within a rapidly developing industry.
Much of this development work and the experience gained from these projects was
introduced into the aftermarket in the form of larger compressor wheel hybrid
turbo’s, 360 degree thrust bearings, VNT – (variable vane technology) and ball
bearing technology.
Merger
In the mid 1990’s Mick Ireland purchased Essex Turbo to compliment his
thriving motorsport business - MIE Turbo. Following the amalgamation the two
companies moved to larger premises with facilities to service both the
passenger car market and the motorsport industry.
Motorsport
Throughout the 1990’s M.I.E Turbo had a major stronghold in the
motorsport industry supplying and re-building turbo’s for the majority of the
worlds top privateer rally teams including the Ford motorsport ‘Works’ cars.
However the Ford Escort's reign at the top came to a close and whilst it still
remained an extremely competitive car most major teams were turning to
Mitsubishi Lancer's and Subaru Impreza’s.
With the introduction of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo range Essex Turbo took the
opportunity to use its acquired knowledge in design and manufacture of its own
ball bearing conversion for the range. These units have been shown to
significantly improve response and boost holding capabilities for both road and
race applications. As a result establishing themselves as a reliable benchmark
unit for engines running under 440 bhp.
Further Developments (R & D)
Essex Turbo continues to develop and test new turbo components. This
work has resulted in the development of the companies’ large turbo conversions
for a whole host of Japanese applications as well as diesel hybrids including
the complex VNT range.
